This is just one of my characters, his name is Kirinor Dawnsnow and he's a Breton. For this character I am a sneaky archer and use a dagger for up close combat. Oh, and he's a werewolf! He's pretty much wanted in every hold because I change into a werewolf even if people are looking. Yeah... it's hard to go near civilization so I gotta stick to the wilds of Skyrim which is what inspired the picture.
First and foremost, this background is not a FAILURE. I think the only thing that fell a bit short in the execution is that, even in twilight lighting like this, the elements in the distance should be a bit lighter. There's dust in the air that catches light, so the trees and mountains should be a bit lighter to create the illusion of depth. My recommendation is to play with some large, soft brushes in a Screen layer mode, and mess with the layer's opacity until you get something you like. That's the only problem I have with the actual background. I think the style fits the character just fine, but could use a smidge more rendering and attention to detail. Nothing I would have noticed if you didn't bring it up, though!
But let me backtrack a second -- The darkness of the background brings me to another issue I have: The character in the extreme foreground gets a bit lost because of it. Especially the bow and quiver. I mean, if you look, it's obvious, but it does take a bit of a conscious effort. I'd prefer if it were a bit more fluid. You could totally get away with that lighter background and then the character staying exactly the way he is now. It would be an awesome contrast and he would pop extremely well.
Other than that, it's as pro as it always is! Great detail in the foreground and background, awesome technique, and good composition. Fantastic work, Kaela!
